I’ve got something to share with you-

I’ve been feeling bored.

To be more specific, I’ve been feeling simultaneously busy and bored. At first glance, I know this sounds like it doesn’t make sense, but stick with me.

Can you relate to this feeling? Summer has been pretty hectic with lots of trips, get-togethers, events, and everything else in between. I found myself having a little pity party about how little time I have, and how hectic life is.

You know the story- we have so much going on this summer and not enough time to enjoy simply relaxing. If you were a fly on the wall in our house for the better part of July, you may have heard:

‘I just wish we didn’t have to travel so much.’

‘There’s no time to relax, or feel refreshed.’

‘Ugh.’

I craved hours upon hours of free time to simply sit and read. This sounded like a dream to me. At the same time, any moment I had to relax and recuperate, I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. I often found myself feeling ‘blah,’ and wishing for space and long vacations, even when I didn’t have anything going on! Then, as my friend Oprah would say, I had an ‘a-ha’ moment.

I started connecting the dots between how I was spending my time and how I was feeling.

Guess what I found? About 85% of the time that I was on social media, I was bored. That’s right- only 15% of the time I actually felt engaged, connected, and enjoyed my time on there. The rest of the time, I was endlessly scrolling down my news feed searching for stories to entertain me. Wow! Don’t get me wrong, I totally knew social media was a time-waster for me, but I had no idea just how much it consumed my precious free time as much as it had.

Turns out I had plenty of time to myself that I wasn’t using the way I wanted to. This was a huge eye opener for me, and I knew I had to step in and do something. Enter, my mission- reduce the toxic social media overload.

I began bringing in more awareness to my time spent on social media, and how often I clicked on that little blue icon out of habit and mindlessness. I’d catch myself having to turn my phone over so that the screen didn’t tempt me. I completely cut out Facebook + Instagram time past 9pm.

I created more space.

I opened up room to read, bake, and cook more during my down time. I connected more with my hubby. It felt more like a mini-vacation during my week rather than the focus on what I didn’t have. I started experiencing the luxury in all of the seemingly small tasks and hobbies. I felt like I could breathe. (Aahhh).

I started to witness how such small tweaks can lead to major successes, super quickly. And want to know the super exciting part about this?

This pattern is changing my life.

If you want, it can start to change yours, too. Think about it- you can choose virtually any area you’d like to improve upon and focus your energy there, bit by bit. In no time, you’ll reap the benefits of just that little bit of effort you put in each day. Whether you start eating healthy, exercising, reading interesting books, attending classes, stoking your inner creativity, or writing, you’re inching closer towards the life you want to be living.

Begin with one simple change. Today. Because if you wait for tomorrow, then you may wait until the next day, and the next. And before you know it, three months have passed and you still haven’t made that change.

Go on, you’ve got this.
